Call to Action: ABA International Human Rights Lobby Day

Dear Human Rights Defenders:

On June 19, ABA Members will meet on Capitol Hill for the Second Annual ABA International Human Rights Lobby Day! This event gives human rights defenders the opportunity to speak with members of the House of Representatives and Senators about important international human rights issues that deserve attention and action.

IHRC Leadership has selected three issues we believe are ripe for ABA IHRLD 2014.

Specifically, Lobby Day participants will ask congressional members to:

Ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)

Increase its involvement with the International Criminal Court (ICC)

★ Ratify the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Of course we have lots of work to do before June 19th, and that's why we are reaching out you. We need your help to make this year's Int’l Human Rights Lobby Day a HUGE SUCCESS! Below is a short list of areas where we need help now as well as the name and email address of the person you should contact if you have questions or need more information.

HOW YOU CAN HELP RIGHT NOW
★ REGISTER –All ABA IHRLD 2014 participants must register here: http://goo.gl/Gpgx1P. Participants include individuals able to lobby in-person on 06/19, nonprofit organizations, businesses, law students and, well…anyone who wants to help coordinate or promote this wonderful event!

★ LOBBYISTS - We need individuals able to meet at Capitol Hill on 6/19 to lobby congressional members. Those who can’t make it to Washington, D.C. also have the option of lobbying at the local level or participating in one of the other efforts below. Note: You don't need to be an ABA Member to lobby in-person, but you must follow the ABA protocols and policies when lobbying on our behalf.

★ SOCIAL MEDIA SUPPORT - There are two main components to ABA IHRLD 2014: in-person lobbying and "virtual" (online) lobbying. Most congressional members have a facebook page and Twitter account. We need an army of social networkers to help us lobby congressional members online. Additionally, we need people with advanced social media skills who can help us leverage the power of the internet to educate the global community about this year’s issues, promote #ABA_IHRLD2014, and increase the IHRC’s overall online visibility.

Contact IHRC Co-Chairs Liz Turchi (lizturchi@gmail.com) and Joe Federici (joe.p.federici@gmail.com) if you need more information about lobbying efforts or would like to otherwise participate in ABA IHRLD 2014.
